Email notifications
Get an email when a quiz is completed or a lead is captured. Set the recipient, sender, subject and body, use tokens, and test your mail delivery.
Quizably can email you, the site owner, when someone completes a quiz or fills in a lead form. The visitor does not receive anything from Quizably. These emails go out through WordPress mail.
Turn on alerts
Open Quiz Builder, then Settings. Changes save automatically and the status pill shows “Saving…” and then “Saved”.
- Go to Notifications, under Email alerts.
- Switch on one or both alerts.
- Optionally enter a Notifications recipient.
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Email me on new submissions | One message each time a visitor completes a quiz | Off |
| Email me on new leads | A message each time a lead form is submitted | Off |
| Notifications recipient | The address the alerts go to | Empty |
If you leave the recipient empty, alerts go to the WordPress admin email. The recipient must be a valid email address or nothing is sent. You can enter only one address, and there is no per-quiz recipient.
When emails are sent
- Submission alert: sent when a visitor finishes a quiz and a result is worked out.
- Lead alert: sent when the lead form is submitted. This can happen before the quiz is finished, and before a result exists. If the quiz uses double opt-in, the lead alert is sent when the visitor clicks the confirmation link instead.
The lead alert fires on every form submission, including a repeat by the same email address (except a lead that already confirmed by double opt-in). A visitor who fills in the form and completes the quiz can therefore cause two emails, one of each kind, if both alerts are on.
Sender settings
Go to Email, then Sender.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| From name | The sender name. Empty uses your site title |
| From address | The sender address. Empty uses the WordPress admin email |
| Reply-To matches lead email | When on, the alert gets a Reply-To header with the lead’s email, so you can reply straight to them. Skipped when the visitor gave no email |
Tip: Use a From address on your own domain, such as one your mail provider or SMTP plugin is set up to send from. Mail that claims to come from an address your server is not allowed to use is often rejected or sent to spam.
Subject and body
Under Email, Alert message, you can write your own wording.
- Submission email subject: placeholder “New submission: {quiz_title}”.
- Submission email body: a rich text editor, with buttons for inserting tokens.
If you leave them empty, Quizably uses built-in wording:
| Alert | Default subject | Default body starts with |
|---|---|---|
| Submission | New quiz submission: {quiz_title} | A quiz has been completed. |
| Lead | New quiz lead: {quiz_title} ({user_email}) | A new lead has been captured. |
Note: One custom subject and one custom body are used for both the submission alert and the lead alert. If you write your own, write it so that it reads well for both.
Tokens
Add tokens to the subject or body and they are replaced with real values. Write them as {token}.
| Token | Replaced with |
|---|---|
{quiz_title} | The quiz title |
{result_title} | The result the visitor got |
{score} | The score |
{user_name} | The visitor’s name |
{user_email} | The visitor’s email |
{submitted_at} | When it was submitted |
{site_title} | Your site title |
{admin_url} | A link to the Leads screen |
In a lead alert, {result_title} is blank and {score} shows “N/A”, because the result is not known yet. Use {user_name} and {user_email} with care in a submission alert too: they are filled only when the visitor gave a lead.
Values inserted by tokens are made safe for email. The body can include paragraphs, line breaks, bold, italic, underline, lists, quotes, headings and links. If the body has no formatting, it is sent as plain text. Formatted bodies also include a plain text version.
Answers are never included. To read answers, use the Leads detail panel.
Delivery basics
Quizably sends alerts with the standard WordPress mail function, so delivery depends on how your site sends email.
- Many hosts send mail poorly or block it. If alerts do not arrive, an SMTP plugin connected to a real mail service is the usual fix.
- Check the spam folder, especially for the first email.
- Make sure the From address is one your mail service is allowed to send from.
- Quizably does not keep a log of sent emails. A mail logging plugin helps when troubleshooting.
Test your setup
There is no Send test button for emails, so test with a real run.
- Switch on Email me on new submissions and Email me on new leads.
- Enter a recipient address you can read.
- Publish a quiz with the lead form turned on. See The lead capture form.
- Take the quiz on the live page and submit the form.
- Check the inbox for both messages.
If nothing arrives, confirm the recipient is valid and test your site’s email with a mail or SMTP plugin. See Troubleshooting.
