Timers, randomization and auto-advance
Set a per-question timer, shuffle question and answer order, control auto-advance, and understand required question behavior.
These options control how visitors move through your questions. Some are set on a single question, and some are set for the whole quiz.
Per-question timer
A timer counts down for one question only.
- Open the quiz and go to the Questions tab.
- Select the question.
- In the Display & rules section, turn on Per-question timer.
- Set Seconds. The default is 30 and the allowed range is 1 to 3600.
- Click Save.
Visitors see a countdown bar and the remaining seconds. The display turns urgent at 10 seconds or less.
When the timer reaches zero, the quiz moves to the next question. This happens even if the question is required and still unanswered. Whatever the visitor had already picked is kept.
Timers are set per question. There is no quiz-wide timer in the free plugin, so turn the timer on for each question that needs one.
Tip: Timers work on every question type and in every template. Give short text questions more seconds than a true or false question.
Randomize questions
Randomize questions shuffles the order of the questions for each visitor.
- Open the quiz and go to the Settings tab.
- In Quiz behavior, turn on Randomize questions. It is off by default.
- Click Save.
Randomize answers
Randomize answers shuffles the answers inside one question.
- On the Questions tab, select the question.
- In Display & rules, turn on Randomize answers.
It is off by default and is set question by question.
How the order stays stable
A random order is chosen once per browser session and kept in the tab’s sessionStorage under the key quizably_quiz_seed. Going back and forward, or refreshing the page, keeps the same layout for that visitor. A new session gets a new order.
Scoring uses answer IDs, so shuffling never changes how an answer counts. When answers are shuffled, the order shown to the visitor is saved with each answer. The “Question x of y” counter follows the shuffled order.
Auto-advance
Auto-advance on answer is a quiz setting in Settings, Quiz behavior. It is on by default. Turn it off if you want visitors to review a choice before clicking Next.
| Question type | Advances when the visitor… |
|---|---|
| Single choice | picks an answer, if auto-advance is on. |
| True / False | picks an answer, if auto-advance is on. |
| Multiple choice | clicks Next. Never auto-advances. |
| Dropdown | clicks Next. Never auto-advances. |
| Short text | clicks Next or presses Enter. |
| Rating | clicks Next. Never auto-advances. |
The last question shows Submit in place of Next. A Back button is available, and answers can be changed after going back.
Required questions
Questions are required by default. The Required answer toggle in Display & rules turns that off for a question.
For a required question the Next button stays disabled until the visitor answers. A short message explains why: “Please choose an answer to continue.” for choice questions, or “Please answer this question to continue.” for others.
If you switch Required answer off, visitors can move past the question without answering. Skipped questions show up as drop-off in question analytics.
Note: The timer can advance past a required question, so a required question with a timer can still be skipped by running the clock down.
