Translate Quizably

How to translate the parts of Quizably that support translation, what stays in English, and how your own quiz text fits in.

The whole of Quizably can be translated with standard WordPress tools: the admin app, the quiz your visitors see, and the PHP text such as the double opt-in email and the confirmation page. The plugin does not ship translated language files, so you add the one you need. This page explains how.

What can be translated

Quizably uses the text domain quizably and includes a template file, quizably.pot, in the plugin’s languages folder. It has about 1,500 strings. They cover:

  • Visitor-facing quiz screens, such as “Next”, “Back”, “Submit”, “Skip”, “Your result”, “Retake quiz”, the resume prompt and the double opt-in notice. This includes the default wording of the lead form.
  • The whole admin interface, including the builder, dashboard, leads and settings screens.
  • Text produced by PHP, such as the confirmation email and confirmation page.

The admin app and the quiz player are JavaScript, and WordPress loads their translations from the language files for the site’s language (JSON files, which tools such as Loco Translate and translate.wordpress.org produce for you).

What you control yourself

Much of what visitors read is your own text, and you can write it in any language:

  • Quiz title, intro title, subtitle and Start button label (on the Intro tab).
  • Questions, descriptions and answer labels.
  • Result titles, content, and the result Button label.
  • Form title, description and field labels and placeholders, and the Submit button label (on the Form tab).
  • The consent text.
  • Notification email subject and body, in Settings.

Write these in your audience’s language directly in the builder. Quizably does not need a translation file for them.

Translate the strings

You do not need to edit plugin files. Use any standard WordPress translation workflow.

  1. Get a translation tool. Poedit is a common desktop option. Some WordPress plugins can translate in the dashboard.
  2. Create a new translation from quizably.pot and choose your language.
  3. Translate the entries and save. You get a .po file and a compiled .mo file named quizably-<locale>.po and quizably-<locale>.mo, for example quizably-fr_FR.mo. For the admin app and quiz player, the tool must also write the JavaScript translation (.json) files. Loco Translate does this when it saves.
  4. Upload the files to wp-content/languages/plugins/. Files in this folder survive plugin updates.
  5. Set your site language in Settings, then General, under Site Language.

WordPress loads the translation on its own. No extra setup is needed.

Tip: Files placed inside the plugin’s own languages folder can be overwritten when the plugin updates. Keep your copies in wp-content/languages/plugins/.

Right to left languages

Quizably supports right to left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew. The admin app and the quiz follow your site’s text direction. Spacing and alignment flip, slide animations and arrows are mirrored, and arrow-key navigation follows the direction. Alignment you set to Left or Right on a screen stays as set. Test a right to left quiz with your theme before you publish it.

Multiple languages on one site

Quizably does not have a built-in language switcher. If you run a multilingual site, the simplest approach is to duplicate the quiz from All Quizzes, rewrite the copy in the other language, and embed each version on the matching page. The Duplicate action creates a draft copy named with “(Copy)”. Publish it from the list when you are ready.
