Install and activate Quizably
Install Quizably from the WordPress Plugins screen or a zip file, activate it, find the admin menu, update it, and understand what uninstalling removes.
Quizably is a normal WordPress plugin. You install it, activate it, and a Quiz Builder item appears in your admin menu. This page covers installing, updating and removing it.
Requirements
Before you install, check that your site meets these minimums:
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.0 or newer |
| PHP | 7.4 or newer |
| Browser (visitors) | A current browser with JavaScript enabled and ES module support |
The plugin has no extra libraries to install. For the full list of compatibility notes, see Requirements and compatibility.
Note: Only users who can open the Quiz Builder menu (Administrators) can manage quizzes. Editors and Authors cannot use the Quizably admin.
Install from the Plugins screen
Use this method if the plugin is available in the WordPress plugin directory.
- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
- Search for Quizably.
- Click Install Now on the Quizably result.
- When the button changes, click Activate.
Install from a zip file
Use this method if you downloaded a .zip file.
- Go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
- Click Upload Plugin.
- Choose the Quizably
.zipfile and click Install Now. - Click Activate Plugin.
If you prefer FTP or a file manager, unzip the file and place the quizably folder in wp-content/plugins/, then activate it from the Plugins screen.
What you see after activation
On activation, Quizably creates its own database tables and gives the Administrator role permission to manage quizzes. Nothing is added to your public site until you place a quiz on a page.
A new top-level menu item named Quiz Builder appears in the WordPress admin sidebar. It contains these items:
- Dashboard
- All Quizzes
- Question Bank
- Leads
- Integrations
- Settings
Click Quiz Builder to open the Dashboard. On a new install it shows “Build your first quiz to start collecting responses.” and a Build your first quiz button.
For a description of every screen, see Tour of the Quizably admin.
First-run notes
- New quizzes are created as Published, so the shortcode works as soon as you paste it into a page. Imported and duplicated quizzes start as drafts.
- Quizably does not add a form to a new quiz. You turn lead capture on yourself in the Form tab.
- Email alerts are off by default. Turn them on in Settings under Notifications if you want them.
- The plugin does not set cookies and makes no external requests on its own. See Data and privacy.
- The quiz builder opens full screen and hides the normal WordPress admin menu while you edit. Use Back to quizzes at the top left to return.
Ready to build something? Follow Quickstart: build your first quiz.
Update the plugin
- Back up your site, including the database. Your quizzes, results and leads are stored in database tables.
- Go to Plugins (or Dashboard, then Updates) and click update now next to Quizably when an update is offered.
- Open Quiz Builder and check that your quizzes still load.
If you installed from a zip file, upload the newer zip the same way as a new install. WordPress will offer to replace the current version.
Deactivate
Deactivating Quizably hides the admin menu and stops quizzes from rendering on your pages, but it keeps all your data. You can reactivate later and find everything as you left it.
Uninstall
Deleting the plugin keeps your data. When you click Delete on the Plugins screen, Quizably leaves every quiz, question, answer, result, submission, lead, setting and question bank entry in the database, so you can delete and re-upload the plugin without losing anything.
To erase everything on delete, for example to meet a privacy request, add this line to wp-config.php before you delete the plugin:
define( 'QUIZABLY_REMOVE_ALL_DATA', true );
With that line in place, deleting the plugin drops all of its database tables and removes every option whose name starts with quizably_. That cannot be undone. Before you do it:
- Export any quizzes you want to keep. In All Quizzes, open the row menu and choose Export. See Export and import a quiz.
- Export your leads from Leads with Export CSV. See Leads dashboard.
- Note that quiz exports do not include leads or submissions.
Deactivating the plugin also keeps all data.
