Question types
The six Quizably question types, their options and limits, how each counts in personality and trivia quizzes, required answers and auto-advance.
Quizably has six question types. You can mix them in one quiz. Add a question from the Questions tab with Add question, then pick a type.
There is no control to change a question’s type after you add it. To switch, add a new question of the right type and delete the old one.
The six types
| Type | What the visitor does |
|---|---|
| Single choice | Picks one answer from a list |
| Multiple choice | Ticks any number of answers |
| True / False | Picks True or False |
| Dropdown | Picks one answer from a dropdown list |
| Short text | Types a short answer |
| Rating | Picks a rating value |
New questions start with the title “New question”. Choice questions start with two answers, “Answer A” and “Answer B”. True / False starts with “True or false?” and the answers True and False.
Single choice
A list of answers where one can be picked. Visitors can use the arrow keys, or press a number from 1 to 9 to choose that answer. By default it moves to the next question as soon as a visitor picks an answer.
Multiple choice
Answers with checkboxes. Visitors tick as many as apply and click Next. It never auto-advances.
True / False
Two fixed answers. It behaves like single choice, and you can map the answers to results in a personality quiz or mark one correct in trivia.
Dropdown
A standard dropdown. The placeholder is “Choose an answer”. It never auto-advances.
Short text
A one-line input. Options in the properties panel under Text field settings:
| Option | Default | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Placeholder text | “Your answer…” | |
| Max characters | 500 | Up to 2000 |
Visitors see a character counter and can press Enter to go on. Text is cleaned of HTML tags and cut to 2000 characters on the server, whatever the per-question limit.
Rating
Options under Rating settings:
| Option | Choices | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Max rating | 5 stars, 10 stars | 5 stars |
| Display style | Stars, Emoji, Numbers (1 2 3) | Stars |
The rating is saved as a number. It never auto-advances.
How each type counts
What a question does to the result depends on the quiz type.
| Question type | In a personality quiz | In a trivia quiz |
|---|---|---|
| Single choice | The chosen answer’s mapped result gets one vote | The answer’s points are added, only if it is marked correct |
| Multiple choice | Every ticked answer with a mapping gets one vote, so one person can vote for several results | Every ticked correct answer adds its points. Wrong ticks do not subtract |
| True / False | Same as single choice | Same as single choice |
| Dropdown | Same as single choice | Same as single choice |
| Short text | Saved, no effect on the result | Saved, not scored, and left out of the “x of y correct” total |
| Rating | Saved, no effect on the result | Saved, not scored, and left out of the total |
In survey and poll quizzes, nothing is scored, and every question type is simply recorded.
In trivia, a multiple choice question counts toward “correct” in the “x of y” line if at least one ticked answer is correct.
To map answers to results, see Personality results. To set points, see Trivia scoring.
Required and optional
Every question is required by default. Turn off Required answer in the Display & rules section of the properties panel to make it optional.
- For a required question, the Next button is disabled until the visitor answers. They see “Please choose an answer to continue.” or “Please answer this question to continue.”
- The last question’s button reads Submit. Back returns to the previous question.
- An optional question can be skipped.
Note: If you turn on the Per-question timer, the quiz moves on when time runs out, even if a required question is unanswered.
Auto-advance
Auto-advance on answer is a quiz-level switch in the Settings tab, under Quiz behavior. It is on by default. When on, Single choice and True / False questions go to the next question as soon as the visitor picks an answer. The other four types always wait for the visitor to click Next.
Turn it off if you want visitors to review their pick before continuing.
Shared question options
Every question type supports these in the properties panel:
- Image: upload an image, then choose Image fit (Contain, Cover or Repeat) and Height (80 to 800 px, default 300).
- Alignment and Vertical alignment.
- Randomize answers: shuffles the answer order for each visitor. The order stays the same for that visitor in one browser session.
- Per-question timer: see Timer and randomization.
- Custom background with Overlay opacity.
See Questions tab for the full editor.
