The Questions tab

Add, edit, reorder and delete questions in the Quizably builder, and set up answer rows, correct answers, points and result mapping.

The Questions tab is where you write the questions visitors answer. It opens when you create a new quiz, and it is also where you land when you click a quiz on the Dashboard’s Recent quizzes list.

The layout

The tab has three areas:

  • A left rail titled Questions with a “N total” count. It lists every question and lets you drag to reorder.
  • A center canvas that shows the selected question the way visitors will see it, and that you edit directly.
  • A properties panel for the selected question. On narrow screens it opens in a drawer from the Properties button.

There is no separate Preview or Publish button in the builder. New quizzes are created as Published, and you publish or unpublish from the All Quizzes list.

Add a question

  1. Open the quiz and go to the Questions tab.
  2. Click Add question. A menu lists the six question types.
  3. Pick one: Single choice, Multiple choice, True / False, Dropdown, Short text or Rating.
  4. Edit the question on the canvas.

If the quiz has no questions yet, click Add your first question to start with a single-choice question.

New questions start with the title “New question” (“True or false?” for True / False). Choice questions start with two answers, “Answer A” and “Answer B”. True / False questions start with “True” and “False”.

Note: A question’s type is chosen when you add it. There is no control to change the type afterward. To use a different type, add a new question and delete the old one. See Question types for what each type does.

Edit a question on the canvas

Click any text on the canvas to edit it.

  • Title: placeholder “What do you want to ask?”. A floating toolbar gives you left, center and right alignment, bold, italic, underline and text color.
  • Description: placeholder “Add a description or hint…”.
  • Image: click Add image to pick one from the WordPress media library, or use Replace and Remove once one is set.
  • Answers: edit each answer label in place. Click Add answer for more.

Changes are held in the builder until you click Save in the top bar or move on with Next. The top bar shows a status such as “Saving…”, “Saved just now” or “Not saved yet”.

Answer rows

Each answer row has a drag handle, a letter (A, B, C and so on), a label field and a hover tray. What the tray shows depends on the quiz type.

In trivia quizzes

Each answer has two controls:

  • Correct: a toggle that marks the answer as correct.
  • Pts: the points the answer is worth (whole numbers, minimum 0).

The default for Pts is 0, and ticking Correct does not fill it in. A correct answer with 0 points adds nothing to the score, so type the points yourself. See Trivia scoring.

In personality, survey and poll quizzes

Each answer has a result button that shows the title of the mapped result, or the word “Result” if none is set. Click it to see the quiz’s results, or choose Clear mapping to remove the link. If you have not created results yet, the menu reads “No results yet - add them in the Results tab.”

One answer maps to one result. Personality quizzes use these mappings to choose a winner, as explained in Personality results. Survey and poll quizzes do not use the mapping to pick a result.

Removing an answer

Open the three-dot menu on the row and choose Delete answer.

Question settings

Select a question to see its properties panel. Sections depend on the question type.

Display and rules

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Required answerOnThe visitor must answer before they can go on. The Next button stays disabled until they do.
Randomize answersOffShuffles this question’s answers for each visitor. The order stays stable for one browser session.
Per-question timerOffCounts down for this question only. When on, you set Seconds (default 30, from 1 to 3600).

See Timers, randomization and auto-advance for how these behave for visitors.

Image

Use Upload image, Replace image or Delete image. Two more controls appear:

  • Image fit: Contain shows the whole image with no cropping, Cover fills the slot and may crop, Repeat tiles the image at its native size.
  • Height: a slider from 80 to 800 px, default 300.

Alignment

Alignment is Left, Center or Right (default Left). Vertical alignment is Top, Center or Bottom (default Top).

Type specific settings

  • Short text shows Placeholder text (default “Your answer…”) and Max characters (default 500, highest allowed 2000).
  • Rating shows Max rating (“5 stars” or “10 stars”, default 5) and Display style (Stars, Emoji or Numbers (1 2 3), default Stars).

Background

Turn on Custom background to upload a background image for this question and set its Overlay opacity from 0 to 100%. See Design, colors and backgrounds.

Reorder questions

Drag a question by its handle in the left rail. The order in the rail is the order visitors see, unless you turn on Randomize questions in the quiz Settings tab.

Duplicate a question

Use the duplicate button on a question in the rail. The copy gets the original’s title with ” (copy)” added, plus its description, type, settings and all of its answers, with their correct flags, points, result mappings and images. The question’s own image and its branching logic are not copied, so add those again on the copy if you used them.

Delete a question

Use the delete button on the question in the rail and confirm the browser prompt, Delete "<title>"? This cannot be undone. Deleting a question cannot be reversed.

Reuse questions from the Question Bank

Click Insert from bank to open Insert from question bank, search for a question and click Insert. See Question Bank.

Scoring notes

Short text and rating answers are recorded but never scored, in any quiz type. They do not count toward the “x of y correct” line in trivia quizzes. Multiple choice questions count every ticked answer.
