How personality scoring works

Map each answer to a result, and Quizably counts votes to pick a winner. Learn the tie rule, what happens with no mapped answers, and how to test.

A Personality / Result quiz picks one result for each visitor. You decide which result each answer points to, and Quizably counts the votes. This page explains exactly how the count works so you can build results that behave the way you expect.

The basic idea

Every answer option can be mapped to one result. When a visitor finishes the quiz, Quizably looks at the answers they picked and adds one vote to the mapped result for each one. The result with the most votes is shown.

There are no weights and no points in a personality quiz. Every mapped answer is worth exactly one vote.

Map answers to results

You need at least one result before you can map anything.

  1. Open your quiz and go to the Results tab. Click Add result and fill in a title and content for each outcome.
  2. Open the Questions tab and select a question.
  3. Hover over an answer row. A button appears that shows Result until you pick one.
  4. Click the button and choose a result from the list.
  5. Repeat for every answer in every question.

If you have not created any results yet, the menu says “No results yet - add them in the Results tab.” To undo a mapping, open the same menu and choose Clear mapping. After you map an answer, the button shows the result’s title.

Each answer maps to one result only. You cannot point a single answer at two results.

Tip: On the Results tab, each result shows “Answers mapping to this result” and a count such as “N mapped”. Use it to check that every result has answers pointing to it.

How votes are counted

Question typeWhat counts
Single choiceThe chosen answer’s mapped result gets 1 vote
Multiple choiceEvery ticked answer that has a mapping gets 1 vote each
True / FalseSame as single choice (you can map True and False)
DropdownSame as single choice
Short textStored, but does not count
RatingStored, but does not count

Multiple choice deserves a note. If a visitor ticks three answers that map to three different results, each of those results receives one vote. A single visitor can therefore vote for several results in one question.

Answers that have no mapping are ignored. They never add a vote to anything.

Short text and rating answers are saved with the submission, but they never change which result a visitor gets. Use them for extra information, not for scoring.

How the winner is chosen

  1. Quizably adds up the votes for each result.
  2. The result with the most votes wins.
  3. If two or more results are tied for the most votes, the tied result that comes first in your result order wins.

The tie rule is fixed. There is no random pick and no “you are both” result. The result listed higher on the Results tab always wins a tie.

Why result order matters

Because of the tie rule, the order of results on the Results tab is part of your scoring. Put the result you want to win ties at the top of the list. The order is the same order you see in the left-hand list on that tab, so check it before you publish.

When nothing is mapped

If a visitor finishes the quiz and none of their answers were mapped to a result, there is no winner from the count. In that case the visitor is shown the first result in your list.

That visitor’s submission is still saved, but it is saved without a result. This means they do not appear in the result distribution on the quiz’s analytics.

This usually happens when you have forgotten to map answers, or when a quiz has only short text and rating questions. Map at least some answers to avoid it.

Worked example

Suppose your quiz has three results, listed in this order on the Results tab:

  1. Explorer
  2. Planner
  3. Dreamer

Question 1 is single choice. Question 2 is multiple choice. Question 3 is single choice. Answers are mapped like this:

QuestionVisitor picksMapped resultVotes added
Q1 (single)“Try something new”ExplorerExplorer +1
Q2 (multiple)“Make a list”PlannerPlanner +1
Q2 (multiple)“Book a trip”ExplorerExplorer +1
Q2 (multiple)“Wait and see”Not mappednone
Q3 (single)“Stay home”DreamerDreamer +1

The final tally is Explorer 2, Planner 1, Dreamer 1. Explorer has the most votes and wins.

Now change the visitor’s Q1 answer to one mapped to Planner. The tally becomes Explorer 1, Planner 2, Dreamer 1, and Planner wins.

For a tie, imagine the visitor skips the Q2 answer “Book a trip”. The tally is then Explorer 1, Planner 1, Dreamer 1. All three are tied, so Explorer wins because it is first in the order.

What the visitor sees

The visitor sees the winning result’s screen: its title, content, image, and optional button. A personality quiz does not show a score. See The Results tab and result screens for the fields a result can have, including redirecting straight to a URL instead of showing the card.

Test your scoring in the builder

The builder does not have a preview button, so test on the live page.

  1. Make sure the quiz is published. New quizzes are published when created. Imported and duplicated quizzes start as drafts and must be published from the quiz list.
  2. Add the quiz to a page with the shortcode or block. See Embed with a block or shortcode.
  3. Take the quiz several times, choosing answers that should lead to each result.
  4. Try a deliberate tie to confirm the first result wins.
  5. Leave every mapped question unanswered where allowed, to see the first-result fallback.

Test runs are recorded as real submissions in your quiz’s analytics.
