Requirements and compatibility

WordPress and PHP versions, theme and browser compatibility, performance facts, accessibility features, translation and right-to-left support, and caching notes.

This page lists what Quizably needs and what to expect when you run it alongside your theme, plugins and caching setup.

Server requirements

RequirementMinimum
WordPress6.0 or newer
PHP7.4 or newer
DatabaseThe standard WordPress database. Quizably creates 8 tables with your table prefix and quizably_
MailA working wp_mail setup if you use email alerts

Quizably has no extra runtime libraries to install. Administrator access is needed to use the Quiz Builder menu.

Email alerts use the WordPress mail function, so delivery depends on your site’s mail setup. An SMTP plugin is a good idea if alerts do not arrive. See Email notifications.

Themes

Quiz styles are scoped, so they do not override your theme and your theme should not break the quiz. You control the look from the design drawer: colors, font, text size, button style, card width, backgrounds and animation. See Design and backgrounds.

One thing can still vary:

  • A very narrow page template squeezes the quiz. Set Card width and Inner width in the Layout section, or use a full-width page template.

The quiz renders inside the page content, where you place the shortcode or block. It works in pages, posts and widget areas that run shortcodes.

Browsers

The visitor-facing quiz loads as a JavaScript module. It is built for current browsers and does not support Internet Explorer 11. Visitors need JavaScript turned on. If JavaScript is off, they see “This quiz requires JavaScript.”

Quizably does not publish a tested-browser list beyond this. Test your quiz in the browsers your audience uses.

Performance

  • Loads only where needed. The quiz scripts and styles are added only to pages that contain a quiz, through the shortcode, the block or an iFrame embed. Other pages do not load them.
  • Size. The main quiz script is about 70 KB raw (about 20 KB gzipped), a shared runtime file is about 113 KB raw (about 44 KB gzipped), and the stylesheet is about 368 KB raw (about 49 KB gzipped). A first load is roughly 113 KB gzipped for scripts and styles, plus fonts.
  • Fonts. Fonts are included with the plugin and served from your own site. No font CDN is used. Browsers download only the font files a quiz actually uses.
  • Admin code. The larger builder code loads only on Quiz Builder screens.
  • Requests while a quiz runs. The quiz makes one request when it loads, one for each answer change, one when the quiz is completed, and one for the lead form.
  • Webhooks. A webhook is queued with WordPress cron and sent in the background, so a slow endpoint does not delay the visitor. If your site sets DISABLE_WP_CRON, a real server cron must run wp-cron.php for webhooks to be delivered. See Webhooks.

External requests

Quizably makes no external requests by default. There is no analytics, tracking or telemetry, and no fonts or scripts from another domain. The only outside traffic comes from things you set up: webhook URLs, images you choose, and social share links that open when a visitor clicks them.

The plugin sets no cookies. It uses the browser’s storage for a random-order seed (only when randomization is on), for saved quiz progress so visitors can resume, and for a note that a popup already opened. See Data and privacy.

Accessibility

Quizably includes these features:

  • Single choice, True / False and Rating questions use radio roles with arrow-key navigation.
  • Multiple choice uses a checkbox group, and Dropdown uses a native select.
  • Inputs have labels, and validation messages use an alert role.
  • The per-question countdown has a timer role and label.
  • Result charts have a text alternative.
  • Images use alt text.
  • Animations respect the visitor’s reduced-motion setting.

Known gaps:

  • The quiz does not move keyboard focus or announce changes when the screen changes from one question to the next.
  • Share buttons are links that open a new tab.

No formal accessibility conformance statement exists. Choose strong text and background color contrast in the design drawer, and add a description to your images.

Translation and RTL

Translation. The whole interface is translatable: the PHP text, the admin app and the quiz player, through the quizably text domain and WordPress’s JavaScript translations. A template file, quizably.pot, with about 1,500 strings is in the plugin’s languages folder. No translated language files are included. Your own text, such as titles, questions, form labels and result text, is whatever you write. See Translation.

Right-to-left languages. The admin app and the quiz follow your site’s text direction. Spacing and alignment flip, slide animations and arrows are mirrored, and the arrow keys move in the matching direction. A slide-in opens in the inline-end corner by default, which is bottom-left on a right-to-left site. An explicit position="bottom-left" or "bottom-right" stays as written. Test your quiz with your theme before you publish it.

Caching

  • Page caching. The quiz data is placed in the page’s HTML. A full-page cache keeps serving the old version of a quiz until you purge the cache, so purge it after editing a quiz.
  • Views. Page views are counted when PHP renders the quiz, so cached pages under-count them.
  • Submissions. The start, answer and complete calls are uncached requests, so submissions are still recorded on cached pages.
  • Security plugins and firewalls. The quiz talks to routes under /wp-json/quizably/v1/public/. Make sure your firewall or security plugin does not block or cache them.
  • Rate limit. Each visitor IP is limited to 60 requests per minute and 300 per hour. Many people behind one shared IP, such as a school or office, share that limit.

See Troubleshooting if a quiz does not appear or does not save answers.
