Quickstart: build your first quiz

Build, publish and test a personality quiz with a lead form in about ten minutes, from the New quiz button to a working quiz on your page.

This walk-through builds a small personality quiz, collects an email at the end, puts it on a page and tests it. The same steps apply to other quiz types with small differences, noted along the way.

If you would rather start from a finished quiz, see the shortcut at the end of step 1.

1. Create the quiz

  1. In the WordPress admin, open Quiz Builder. You land on the Dashboard.
  2. Click New quiz.
  3. On “How do you want to start?”, click Start Blank (“Start from scratch”).
  4. Under “What kind of quiz are you building?”, choose Personality / Result and click Next.
  5. Under “Choose a template”, pick Classic and click Next. You can restyle it later.
  6. Under “Name your quiz”, enter a Quiz title (for example “What’s Your Coffee Personality?”). The Slug fills in automatically. Click Create quiz.

You land on the Questions tab of the new quiz. The quiz is already published, but it has no content yet.

Tip: To skip writing from scratch, choose Choose a Template in step 3 instead. You pick one of the ready-made starter quizzes, name it, and click Create quiz. Everything in the steps below then becomes editing rather than writing.

The quiz type cannot be changed after creation, so pick the one that fits. See Quiz types if you are unsure.

2. Add your results

A personality quiz needs results before you map answers to them, so start in the Results tab.

  1. Open the Results tab.
  2. Click Add result.
  3. Fill in the Result title and the description (“Describe the result - what does it mean for the user?”).
  4. Repeat for each outcome. Three or four results work well.

For trivia, this tab is called Score bands. For surveys it is Result, and for polls Tally. A survey or poll takes exactly one result, which acts as your own thank-you screen. Add it if you want your own wording. Without it, a survey ends on a built-in thank-you screen and a poll on the vote results. See Results tab.

3. Add questions and answers

  1. Open the Questions tab.
  2. Click Add your first question (or Add question, then choose Single choice).
  3. Click the title on the canvas and type your question.
  4. Edit the two starter answers (“Answer A” and “Answer B”) and click Add answer for more.
  5. For each answer, hover over the row and use the result button (it reads Result) to choose which result that answer points to.

The result that collects the most answers wins. If two results tie, the one listed higher in the Results tab wins.

Add five to eight questions. Use the list on the left to reorder them by dragging.

For trivia quizzes, each answer instead has a Correct toggle and a Pts box. A correct answer scores zero unless you type points. See Trivia scoring.

4. Set up the lead form

A new quiz has no form. To collect emails:

  1. Open the Form tab.
  2. Under Show the form, choose End of quiz. The form appears after the last question and before the result.
  3. Under Optional form, choose Yes if visitors may skip it, or No to require it.
  4. Email is always on and always required. Turn on Name if you also want it.
  5. To show a consent checkbox, enter text in GDPR consent text. If it is empty, no checkbox appears.

See Lead capture form.

5. Check the intro and design

  • In the Intro tab, edit the title, subtitle and Start button label.
  • Click the sliders icon (“Design settings”) at the top of the builder to open the design drawer. Change colors, font and button style, then click Save.

See Design and backgrounds.

6. Save and publish

Click Save in the top bar. The builder has no Publish button. New quizzes are published when created. If you ever need to hide a quiz, go to All Quizzes, open the row menu and choose Set to draft. Choose Publish to bring it back.

7. Embed it on a page

  1. Keep pressing Next in the top bar until you reach the Summary tab. It shows “Your quiz is ready!”.
  2. Under Shortcode, click Copy. It looks like [quizably_quiz id="12"].
  3. Edit a page or post. Add a Shortcode block and paste it, or use the Advance Quiz block and choose your quiz under Choose quiz.
  4. Update the page.

See Embed a quiz.

8. Test it

  1. Open the page while logged out, or in a private window.
  2. Click Start quiz, answer the questions, fill the form and view your result.
  3. Open Quiz Builder, then Leads. Your test email appears in the list.
  4. Open the quiz, go to the Settings tab and look at the Analytics section to see the submission.

Note: Test runs count as real submissions and real leads. Delete test leads in Leads with the Delete lead icon. If you want a notification email for each lead, turn on Email me on new leads in Settings.
