How trivia scoring works
Set points on correct answers, define inclusive score ranges, and learn how gaps, overlaps and the x of y correct line behave in a Trivia quiz.
A Trivia / Score-based quiz adds up points for correct answers and then shows the result whose score range contains the total. This page covers how points work, how to set score ranges, and the edge cases to watch for.
Points and the Correct flag
Each answer in a trivia quiz has two controls. Hover over an answer row on the Questions tab to see them:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Correct | Marks the answer as a right answer |
| Pts | The number of points the answer is worth (whole numbers, minimum 0) |
An answer only earns points when it is marked Correct. The score is the sum of the points on all correct answers the visitor picked.
Note: Ticking Correct does not set any points. Pts starts at 0, so a correct answer with 0 points scores 0. Type a value in Pts for every correct answer, for example 1.
Wrong answers never subtract points.
How each question type scores
| Question type | How it scores |
|---|---|
| Single choice | The chosen answer’s points count if it is marked correct |
| Multiple choice | Every ticked correct answer adds its points. Wrong ticks do not subtract |
| True / False | Same as single choice |
| Dropdown | Same as single choice |
| Short text | Stored, but not scored |
| Rating | Stored, but not scored |
For multiple choice, the question counts as correct in the “x of y correct” line if at least one ticked answer is correct. The points still follow the rule above: each ticked correct answer adds its own points.
Short text and rating questions are not graded. They are also left out of the total in “x of y correct”.
Set up score ranges
In a trivia quiz the results tab is called Score bands. Each result is a band with a score range.
- Open the Score bands tab.
- Click Add result. A new band is called “Tier 1” and starts with a range of 0 to 0.
- Enter the band’s title and content, such as “Beginner”.
- In the properties panel, find Score range and set Min and Max.
- Add more bands until every possible score is covered.
The helper text reads: “Visitors landing inside this range see this result.”
Tip: Work out your maximum score first. If you have 10 questions worth 1 point each, your top score is 10, and your bands might be 0 to 3, 4 to 6 and 7 to 10.
How a score is matched to a band
Quizably goes through your bands in the order they are listed and picks the first one that contains the score.
- Ranges are inclusive on both ends. A score of 3 fits a band of 0 to 3 and also a band of 3 to 6.
- If ranges overlap, the first matching band in the list wins.
- Empty Min or Max boxes are saved as 0 in the builder, so an untouched band means “exactly 0”. Always fill in both values.
Gaps in your ranges
If a visitor’s score falls in a gap that no band covers, there is no match. The visitor is shown the first band in your list, including their score line. Their saved submission, however, has no result attached, so they do not appear in the result distribution on analytics.
Avoid this by covering the full range from 0 to your maximum score with no gaps.
Default ranges
A new band starts at 0 to 0. If you add a band and forget to set its range, only visitors who score exactly 0 can land on it.
What the visitor sees
The result screen for a trivia quiz shows:
- The label “Your score”.
- A line in the form “x of y correct”, for example “7 of 10 correct”.
- The matching band’s title, content and optional image or button.
- A collapsible Review answers section, if turned on.
The “x of y correct” line counts questions, not points. “y” is the number of graded questions (choice questions). “x” is how many of those had a correct answer. The points total decides the band, while the line counts questions. They match when every correct answer is worth 1 point.
Answer review
The review section lets visitors see each question with the answers they picked, marked right or wrong. Skipped questions show “(skipped)”.
To turn it on or off:
- Open the quiz and go to the Settings tab.
- Under Result screen, find Show answer review (trivia).
- Switch it on or off. It is on by default.
Worked example
A five-question quiz has these bands, in this order:
| Band | Min | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Rookie | 0 | 2 |
| Regular | 3 | 4 |
| Expert | 5 | 5 |
Each correct answer is worth 1 point. Question 4 is a short text question, which is not scored, so four questions are graded.
| Visitor | Correct | Score | Band | Line shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | 1 | Rookie | 1 of 4 correct |
| B | 3 | 3 | Regular | 3 of 4 correct |
| C | 4 | 4 | Regular | 4 of 4 correct |
Visitor C got every graded question right. Their score is 4, which is inside Regular. Expert needs 5, but the highest possible score is 4 because the short text question gives no points. This is a gap in the design: nobody can reach Expert. The fix is to change Expert to 4 to 4 and Regular to 3 to 3, or to add a scored question.
Now suppose Question 2 is multiple choice worth 2 points per correct answer, and a visitor ticks two correct answers. They earn 4 points from that question alone, yet it counts as one correct question in the “x of y” line.
Test your scoring
- Publish the quiz and place it on a page. See Embed with a block or shortcode.
- Take the quiz with all correct answers, all wrong answers, and a few in between.
- Check that each score lands in the band you expect, especially at the edges of each range.
